If I understand, the further don the strings the less mid and treble you have, the less fret noise the pickups get and a smoother sound. I am just trying to smooth out the sound of my bass, it has a little too much character, lol.

Um, no.

Have you done a Google search for any of the many bass setup guides that are online? Also, there are numerous discussions of pickup settings here on TB you can find by searching.
