Sharp Frets???

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I just got a Lackland 55-01 from musicians friend (good deal on the blemished line). One issue is one of the knobs is either bitten down or just wont stay on (if someone has a solution for this, feel free). The main issue is the frets. All of the frets have a little bit protruding out the sides, and they are rather sharp. Is this something I can have fixed, or should I just send the bass back??

It sounds like your fingerboard has shrunk from the dry indoor climate in the winter. Now is your chance to fix it for good and get the fret ends levelled and rounded over, but you'll probably have to get a tech to do it for you. You could do it yourself but unless you've got some experience, best get someone experienced to do it.

This is a common problem. A bass I bought last summer was perfect until this winter when the heat came on and the the air is dry all the time. Now I have this same condition so I'll have to get out the files and get to work. Once it's done it won't likely be a problem again.

I bought a bass from the southeast (humid) & had it shipped here (dry) and it exhibited the same condition. I took it to a tech & got the fret ends filed for twenty bucks, no prob since.

20 bucks huh? Maybe theres hope yet, cause this one was on its way back. Is the broken knob a super glue fix too?

I wouldn't use super glue, or any other glue to fix the knob. It might never come off again. You'd better take a look and find out why the knob is loose. I don't have experience with that bass, but if it's held on tight with a set screw, that could be the problem. Or if held on by friction, it could be worn and causing it to slip. Take a look and report back and someone will have an answer.
