My SX J Bass hums pretty bad, so I bought this - http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...ape?sku=364741
Is there any particular way to apply it to the pickup cavity?

Huh, just bought some of this today. I've never done it before but I figured I would get around to giving it a try pretty soon.

Look in the pickups and electronics category, there is a sticky at the top of the page with pics.

Not really, it's pretty easy.

Just make sure the cavity is clean before you apply the tape, it will stick better for longer that way. Also, make sure that there are no gaps between the tape strips and make sure to cover the entire cavity including the cover plate.

So I remove the cover plate and cover all that too? Also, how far up the pickups should I go with the tape?

Yep, but you only need to cover the inside of the cover plate.

Not sure what you mean by "how far up the pickups;" you don't usually put shielding tape on the pickup itself unless it's a single-coil with the coils exposed...

You want to cover the insides of the pickup cavities with the tape up to their top edges.

So could I cover up the exposed springs near the bottom?

Thanks, that's what I need to see. I tried that thread but I can't see the pictures. Should I take my pickups out when I do this?

If you can do what flea claypool did without taking out the pickups, you are a magician.

BTW be careful with that stuff, it can cut you quite badly as you smoosh it around to get it to lay flat. I split my right index fingertip with it, took weeks to heal, couldn't play.

Shielding

There is a great article with photos and clear instructions on some of the work you need to do. It's in the Wiki section.
