Shipping in cold weather

Sorry if this is the wrong area to post this question, but I wasn't sure where to put it.

The weather's really starting to get cold here in the northeast, and I'm concerned about a bass I just recently purchased which is en route. I once had a bass's finish crack in transit, and I've been told that this can happen due to extreme variances in temperature. Is there any precaution I can take to assure that the bass will acclimate to my home without a problem? What's the best measure to take? Do you leave the bass unpacked and in the case/carton until it reaches room temperature before opening it, or does that trap moisture? I've also had basses arrive with moisture on their surfaces too, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd just leave it packed in a room in the house that stays at a fairly stable temperature and give it a few hours to warm gradually. What else can you do really? I've never had a bass get a damaged finish in the weather here in Ontario in the winter or in many years on the road where the bass would be in a cold equipment truck overnight and brought in and taken out of the case immediately. I think if it's a nitro finish it's more likely to happen.

i know i shouldent, but i often leave my bass in my car overnight. its actually out there right now..

ive yet to experience any problem from it being in bad weather besides going out of tune (even that is rare..but i blame SIT strings for that.

if i had to guess, id say my main bass has spent probobly 20-30 nights in the trunk or backseat since i first got it.
