just got a fender active deluxe jazz. the neck pick up doesnt seem to work. no sound if I pan it all to the neck. would this be in the wiring? or should I look for new pick ups? I've done some soldering so is this something I could attemp myself?

You could conect the pickup directly to the jack and see if you get any signal from it first. I have a spare jack with couple of wires attached to it that I use to test these thing. If the pickup is working OK than you can start looking at other things.

Pickups are passive devices with no moving or active parts, so frankly, unless you whang on it, I don't see how one could fail in normal use. Pots, however, are wearout parts, as are jacks. So, if it were mine, I would look at any and everything else that is electronic BEFORE I considered the pickups. I would bet that a pot came loose, and some wanghead cranked on it, twisted it in the control cavity (along with the wires) and shorted out the signal from that pickup. Pull the cover plate and controls, and make sure nothing is twisted up as a first step . . .

Tim,

OP did say that electronics look OK visualy. The pickup test would be an easy one to do and eliminate that problem first and then look at electronics only if the pickup works.
