not so much for fretwork, but these make great neck rests for general use.

Incidentally, using a bag full of lead shot introduces lead contaminate (in the form of dust) to the shop. You will breathe it. If you do not wash before eating or smoking you will ingest it. Not recommended.

| | | | I use one of those Fender Neck rest mat thingies when I do any work on a neck. That being said, they're ridiculously overpriced, and the foam wears out fast. But, you won't get lead poisoning.

But, damn!! It's just another thing to give you G.A.S.!!! |

I might try the pinto bean idea. Never thought of that. I just need a nice bag to put them in. |

If all else fails you can get them from Film Tools in Hollywood. |

As are navy beans. Pintos are more for the flamenco crowd.

Steel shot sucks for outdoor use in bags as it rusts and clumps together...which I guess isn't much of an issue on a guitar bench. Lead is nasty stuff to be in regular contact with. I bet the beans work well. |

Less expensive is sand, but, put it first into a plastic zip lock bag. I use it for hammering in frets, not a work bench neck rest. I made that out of plywood with carpet for padding.
