Shot Bags

Filled with lead shot and used as a neck rest while doing fret work. Where might I find them?

gun shops.

not so much for fretwork, but these make great neck rests for general use.

Incidentally, using a bag full of lead shot introduces lead contaminate (in the form of dust) to the shop. You will breathe it. If you do not wash before eating or smoking you will ingest it. Not recommended.

They're widely used in the film biz especially by grips. Try someplace like this.

I use one of those Fender Neck rest mat thingies when I do any work on a neck. That being said, they're ridiculously overpriced, and the foam wears out fast. But, you won't get lead poisoning.

My guy uses pinto beans (uncooked, of course), in a cloth sack. Pretty good idea, I guess. It'll conform to any shape.
But, damn!! It's just another thing to give you G.A.S.!!!

This is what I'm going for. I don't mean shooting rests; I mean bags of lead buckshot. I've had trouble locating a source.

I might try the pinto bean idea. Never thought of that. I just need a nice bag to put them in.

The place I linked (DETROIT POWER & LIGHT) has lead shot bags. If they don't have exactly what you want they'll be able to tell you who does.
If all else fails you can get them from Film Tools in Hollywood.

I just ordered an empty burlap shot bag to put dried beans in. Sounds like a good idea to try, anyway. I appreciate all the responses. Thanks.

Mmm. In Canada, lead shot has been outlawed for a long time, we use steel shot which is, of course, the best shot for metal.

As are navy beans. Pintos are more for the flamenco crowd.

You can still use lead shot bags in Canada. Steel shot sucks for outdoor use in bags as it rusts and clumps together...which I guess isn't much of an issue on a guitar bench. Lead is nasty stuff to be in regular contact with. I bet the beans work well.

Gadzooks Jeff, I thought the punch line would give it away. Thanks for ruining my very first "best for metal" reference.:P

Back on topic, I too need a bean bag!

You can buy them on Ebay, too.

I like the pinto bean or aquarium gravel ideas.

I have an old crown royal bag filled with rice. Works great.

I have a vinyl, zippered bank deposit bag filled with #9 lead bird shot. Less expensive is sand, but, put it first into a plastic zip lock bag. I use it for hammering in frets, not a work bench neck rest. I made that out of plywood with carpet for padding.
