Shubb Talon stand?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone used either of these for bass?
Shubb Talon Guitar Stand
Ibanez ST101 Guitar Stand

I just got a new Protec gig bag and my little Hercules won't fit without straining the zipper. I'm using a Yamaha TRB1005.

Tried one of the Talons once, but my SB-900 was on the point of tipping off it, seemed to work just fine with a P on it though.

I got a couple of K & M Wave stands off Ebay, & they're superb. Very stable, fold flat, lightweight & an easy fit in a gigbag.

Pete.

In general, 3 point-type stands work well for basses with flat butts (like P) and not very well for basses that slant across the bottom (like a J). The other complaint I have with this design is that the center of gravity for the bass is very low, making it easier to catch the headstock and knock the bass over. Taller stands like the Ultimate and Hercules have their own weaknesses, but strike me as stable against a greater number of threats, provided they are properly opened and the legs spread completely on the floor. To each his own (I own both styles), but that's been what has motived me to bring only tall stands on gigs.

I have one of these stands and I paid around $20 at Sam Ash. Works great with my P, but all of my other basses need to be supported with a different style of stand.

Not recommended if you have crazy dogs or kids.

Thanks for all you contributions. I'll clarify my situation just to save some of you the effort of typing unnecessarily:

I use tall stands at home. I usually throw them in the car before a gig and get them out if the situation warrants it. For most gigs, though, I've found the small 3 point Hercs have been perfectly adequate and they work well with my fairly flat bottomed basses, but they no longer fit my gig bags, so I just need pointers on stands that will.

I'll be checking out the K&M Wave (thanks Pete) and would appreciate any contributions from those who own the two stands in my original post or similar.

Thanks dogofgod (or can I call you dog? :-) ).

Which particular stand did you mean? The Schubb, Ibanez or K&M?

+1, i only trust the hercules hangar-types;

the picture is deceptive, in that the top tube is never set remotely that far up; in practice, the stand is about 2/3rds as tall as in that picture.

they keep the center of gravity low and have a wide stance if set right, they lock the instrument into the hanger, they can be bumped pretty hard without falling over (or letting the guitar fall off), will accommodate any instrument shape except headless, and fold up pretty small with no removable pieces to lose.

oh, and unlike the old hamilton hangars which also have all these features, the hercules versions aren't made of square-edged steel bars covered with foam that eventually wears through, causing dings and gouges

Been using one of those for about two years, no issues unless you actually try and knock the bass off. (that was a fun gig )

It folds away to roughly the size of a 4-gang extension socket. Fits in a gig bag/compartment of a hardcase no problem at all.

I had a quick look and couldn't find a US supplier, but with all these (infuriating) regional settings, I have no idea what the various sites are automatically hiding from me!

An ebay search of 'compact guitar stand' should bring up any results there are.

+1 on the sturdiness etc of Hercules stands, but mine is still quite large when you fold it down: It would never fit in a gig bag.

Uh ... not a chance I'd use that, or any other mini-stand. Give me Ultimate, Hercules, or even those cheap tube jobs ... anything that supports the guitar higher up on the neck as well as the back.

I've used one of those Ibanez stands since the about 1990. Great for basses that fit that type of stand... P basses fit great, J basses not so much. Very stable, definitely recommended.

Thanks walterw. That is exactly the stand that I use at home and on stages where accidents are likely to happen. Like I said, though, I'm looking for one that will fit in my gig bag.

I have a talon (cheapy Ibanez GSR200 beginner bass) and love it but it's just at the house. It even looked great until the g/f's cat thought the "talons" where a chew toy.

Agreed though, I wouldn't leave it sitting out in a high traffic area or too close to the front of a stage. In a "corner" (of a room, amp/wall junction, etc.) would be preferable in case something struck it. Make sure it's out of the way.
