Leave them on there. A lot of people prefer them so they still know where they're playing.

Most fretless basses come with the side markers, so no one will think it is weird that they are there.

He defretted a fretted bass, meaning the side dots are in the center position of the fret, making them completely useless for fretless and also a distraction. Most side dots are inlayed into the neck in some fashion, so your best bet is probably to cover them up somehow, maybe with marker or a bit of acrylic paint.

Oooops! You are right.

I just held up my fretless to my fretted and yep, they are different.

Excuse me while I get some channel locks to extract my foot from my mouth.

As they say in new orleans, its all good

I am wondering if the side dots can be pried out, or if i need to sand them down. I don't know how they are installed.

It would be easier and safer to drill them out, being sure to use a bit that leaves a hole with nice clean edges. The plugs that you use to repair the holes will be an eyesore if the hole is ragged. Prying them out is a no-no!

My advice is to try to color the dots to match the neck. It's as easy to change the color of the dots as it is to match the color of wooden plugs.
