Silly question.........

Can tuners make a bass sound better??

I installed some new Hipshot Ultralight tuners on my Lakland 55-01 and I could swear it sounds better (if not just a little bit)! Played at rehearsal last night and it just seemed to have a bit more presence. Or am I imagining things??

The "it's ALL in the electronics" folks will deny it, but it's quite likely that the Hipshots changed the resonant frequency of the bass, and that translates into the strings having some more presence than they had with the old tuners. Of course it's also possible that the strings are different. I've found that just relaxing strings and restringing them often makes them sound "newer"- and I suspect that's a lot of what happens when people take strings off to clean them.

I used to manage a guitar store so I'd often loosen strings all the way on a bass rather than replace them for lots of work. And that's where I found that they often sounded like freshly boiled strings afterwards- to the point I quit screwing around with boiling. I suspect that is part of what happened when you put new tuners on.

If you think of how some people will put a clamp on the headstock to reduce dead spots, it's conceivable that lighter tuning machines might make a difference. Also, who knows, maybe the old tuners were loose, which could affect the tone as well as the tuning.

probably because it felt lighter and you were not fighting the neck allows you to relax and listen to the bass more

This just could be the case. The old tuners were loose (well at least a couple of them were). The Hipshots are really snug and tight fitting!
