| The "it's ALL in the electronics" folks will deny it, but it's quite likely that the Hipshots changed the resonant frequency of the bass, and that translates into the strings having some more presence than they had with the old tuners. Of course it's also possible that the strings are different. I've found that just relaxing strings and restringing them often makes them sound "newer"- and I suspect that's a lot of what happens when people take strings off to clean them.
I used to manage a guitar store so I'd often loosen strings all the way on a bass rather than replace them for lots of work. And that's where I found that they often sounded like freshly boiled strings afterwards- to the point I quit screwing around with boiling. I suspect that is part of what happened when you put new tuners on.
