Sleeves in bolt-on neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Did a search for this but to no avail. I'm not using the right search terms...

Has anyone here ever installed sleeves in a bolt-on neck/body? By this I mean that instead of the neck screws going directly through wood they go through metal (i.e. threaded or unthreaded sleeves running all the way through the body and into metal threaded sleeves in the neck wood).

The idea is to be able to remove the neck multiple times without putting strain on the wood, like if you wanted to pack the bass up into something like a carry on bag for an airplane.

I'm still gonna search for info on for this one so if I answer my own question I will edit. Thanks!

What you want are threaded inserts. They are threaded right into the neck permanently.

Eric is right. Also, you don't need to thread the body, just the neck will do.

Told you I'd answer my own question...this route is a bit pricey, but may be worth it.

$90!!!!

when I still had my shop open I was charging less than that for materials plus install labor. materials ought to cost you around $10 for the inserts (depending on where you get them)

use hardened steel inserts instead of the softer stainless ones. I prefer a 10-24 internal thread on my inserts. I also utilized stainless machine screws

all the best,

R

+1, also stay away from the brass ones also...too soft, the tabs tend to break when you apply torque to screw them in. (ask me how i know)

forgot to mention in my earlier post that the OP should check the Luthier's Forum here on TB and search on threaded inserts. several of us have written detailed process for installing these gems, and a few even are well detailed with images.

all the best,

R
