Slotting a Stem Tree

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm assembling a bass and I got an un-slotted stem tree by mistake. What would be the easiest way to slot the stem tree since I have no tools at all. Any leads would be much appreciated.

It is not necessary to slot the disc style string tree. If you wish to do so the procedure is the same for slotting a nut or saddle. The best and easiest tools to use are nut files. If you do not wish to purchase nut files then you can use a round tapered needle file and approximate the diameter of the string with the file. If you are particular about the finished product, nut files will do the job at least as good and save at least ten to fifteen minutes. It will save an incredible amount of frustration.

That's what I kind of figured. Sucks that the stem tree didn't come pre-slotted. It would saved me some headache. Thanks for the input though.

Compare the cost of buying a slotted stem tree against a set of nut files.
