Smelly Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
As some of you may have seen on my last thread, i just aquired a 1974 Fender P that had been sitting in its case for quite some time. During that time it got damaged from water somehow. As a result the finish on the back of it is all messed up, but besides that it also smells kindof funny, like old. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the scent? Thanks everyone.

I once purchased a bass that smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. I did a thorough cleaning of the instrument and case, then left a small satchel of lavender leaves in the case. Bass and case now smell like lavender. It's pretty nice, actually.

If you have a screened in porch or secure outside area, I had a 72' jazz that had that same musty smell. Fresh air is the best cure I have found for this.

Do not under-estimate the power of baking soda. It really is great stuff for neutralizing odors.

I've found a product called Ozium to work pretty well. In the automotive section of department stores, or at an autozone pepboys, etc.

Spray some on a paper towel and put it in the case with the bass. Refresh the ozium every day on the paper towel and after a couple of days it should straighten up. I had a bass that got "skunked" and this solved the problem rather nicely.
