Is there anyway of smoothing out fret ends on your own? What tools do I need? Just the basics. Don't need to go crazy. Just smooth out some rough edges. Thanks

It is just using a file, but this is a service most decent music stores do at a fairly modest price. I believe it is called "rolling" the fretboard edges. I have had it done on many guitars and basses over the years and it fixes those sharp edges.

This is what I have found to work best.
STEWMAC.COM : Fret End Dressing File

I have tried small needle files but they have a tendency to gouge up the frettboard if you are not real careful.
For less then $15.00 you have a tool that will last you a life time and do the job properly, cleanly and fast.

BTW I am a tool junkie.
