Whilst I empathise with you in that sanding your hard earned investment seems like madness and a little scary, remember, it's a tool, and it's your tool. It's meant to be played, not revered like a precious heirloom. Do what you need to do to make it fit you.
If you're worried about resale value, unless it's a priceless vintage, I wouldn't worry. I dare say you bought it to keep, not sell on at a later date. So treat it like you own it!
