Angry So I strung up my new T-40 last night...

Sign in to disble this ad
and I noticed a problem. the farther down the neck, the closer the G string got to the edge of the fretboard, to the point of being right on the edge. My first thought is, great, I got a warped neck. Upon further inspection, I see the problem. Apparently, when they were building this one, quality control fell asleep. The bridge pickup is just a bit off center, and whoever installed the bridge, lined it up to that pup, not the neck...so my bridge is off center. Hopefully I don't have to move it so much that I have to plug and re-drill the holes for the string-through.

How does a bass go 30 years and no one ever notice something like that?

Can you shift the neck a little?

I remember a thread like this a while back, and the owner loosened the neck, shifted it a little, and the bass was more in line than before.

The bass was built on a CNC machine (the first to do so, BTW). It's very odd for the pup to be off center.

It's playable like it is, it's just really close to the edge. I thought about shifting the neck, but there's no room in the pocket for it.

If someone with a T-40 could do me a favor and post a closeup of the neck pocket, straight on or a little off to the bottom? Neck can be in...I just want to check something.

Ok, mine is different. Now I'm wondering if it wasn't put on the CNC machine off center. My neck pocket, on the bottom, is about 1/8in. bigger than the neck. The pocket itself is a snug fit, but it's like it was routed 1/8in. high. The little piece of wood that runs along the bottom of the neck is even longer. Hard to explain, and I don't have a pic at the right angle. I'll try to get one later.

I'm crazy busy, but I'll try and snap shots of mine when I get home and post one.

"Send it back" !!!!! Dude, these were built 30+ years ago!

I actually did that to another bass where the g string was very close ( for a non pro player like me), to the fretboards edge. I'd squeak one once in a while..

Hope these help some...

Is there just a slight lip on the body right there? The body not exactly flush with the neck? If so, than mine may be normal.

I don't get it. I took it apart today, to fix the switches. It's routed right, the screw holes for the pups are right, which means they are mounted right,...the bridge seems centered...but something is off somewhere.

Looks like it's designed to have the strings right along the edge of the board. Weird.

1. Loosen strings
2. Loosen 3 necks bolts
3. Slightly loosen the 4th
4. Pull hard in the direction you need the neck to shift and keep holding it
5. Screw neck bolts in while still pulling on the neck

Problem solved

...until the string on the other side falls of the edge of the board.

Nah I have the same problem with my 3 point Strat. Slightly loosen the strings and screws, pull the neck into position till your happy with it, tighten the screws again.
