So LED fret markers?....

Sign in to disble this ad
I was thinking (out of boredom and randomness) that having LED fretmarkers wud be awesome.

Wot do ppl think about them?
My only concern is the instalation of them onto the fretboard. Damaging the neck/board maybe????

My first handcrafted guitar (LP/PRS mix) with Fretleds - YouTube

Apparently there are a number of different kits/guitars out there than you can buy for this exact idea. Seems novel, I don't know if it's exactly my style but it could be fun to do on a cheap throwaway guitar just for kicks.

They are pretty cool and I have found them pretty useful as well. At first I thought I'd never use them but I find myself always turning them on. They make you play better right?

I am very interested in what you come up with as I am in the process of a Spector restoration that will require a new fingerboard/fretboard at somepoint. I have to decide fretted or fretless soon but either way have been thinking that LEDs would be a very cool and unique addition and there would be no better time than now to work that out.

IMo the only way to do led fretmarkers right is have them built into the neck by the maker. The tape on side of neck strip versions arent very good in my experience. They tend to lift up at the ends and the little thin lead to the battery box is prone to breakages. However the fretfx system does seem superior to the fretlord version for durability. Havent tried the fretfx but users report good overall experience.

As it goes, someone recently commisioned me to make him some animated fret leds for his guitar...I'm working on them now

Similar 'patterns' to this, but using 10 'marker' leds spread along the fretboard....

It's an interesting mod to do, but I really do think a skeleton suit is a better gimmick.

Now he's going to be doing blacklight reactive skeleton suit with flashing led's on instrument and he's gonna get all confused rhythm wise by the blinking leds and not play as well. Lol.

Yes built-in LED markers are best, only I wasn't cool enough to order them when I got my fretless Alembic! Now I'm sorry because the Alembic has brass markers that got very dark and makes them a true pain to see on a dark stage.

I do own a bass with fretfx markers. Pretty nice. just a clear thin strip that sticks onto the side of the fingerboard. Well made. No problems. Company, however won't change ANYTHING for love nor money! For example you can't get a strip with wires at other end (to use bass 9 volts rather than battery box on headstock). And I just wrote them to see if they would make one with one color LEDs for most markers and contrasting colors for the octaves... Answer was, well, if they did "custom" colors for me then other people would hear about it and start asking for all manner of color combinations and that would drive them nuts so it's much better to simply tell me and any other potential customers to pound salt. They are way behind on production anyway. There ya go.
