Solution For a Stripped Truss Rod?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, this sucks. First time I've ever done it. What's the solution? Is it repairable, or must a new one be put it? CAN a new one be put in?

Check out this video

You may want to post this in the Luthiers' Corner of this forum. Otherwise, check out this video:

Agreed - either the repair or luthier forums would be better avenues. The answer, at least with the info provided thus far, is...it depends. Sorry to come across like a knucklehead, but the more info you can provide, the better. What kind of bass? Double-action rod? You're sure it's the rod itself, or could it be the nut?

Good luck...FWIW I'm in a similar situation as well, although it appears to be a mechanical failure.

Not enough info.
Anything can be repaired - it just depends on how much you want to spend.
You're in Manhattan, right? Take it to Matt at 30th Street guitars (between 7th and 8th). He'll give you an honest answer, but it might not be the one you want to hear.

Hi.

Yes, much more info is needed. That said, the advice to take the bass to an expert is the safest one.

For starters, Your profile says you have multiple basses, which one is it?

Anything's repairable, but generally if the rod itself is stripped, not the nut which is easily replaceable, a non-vintage bolt on neck is "donated" . To a local luthier or to the dumpster, Your choice.

Thanks for the replies. It's a Marcus Miller, so I'm presuming it's a Fender style rod.

Not sure what you mean by "the nut" -- obviously not the string nut. Is that just the tip of the rod? Then yes, that's it.

I've been to 30th st. They do nice work.

Any idea what the cost of a replacement would be?

Hi.

By the nut I mean the bullet like piece with the allen slot as You correctly guessed.

If it's just the nut that needs replacing, the piece itself costs just a few bucks. A (neck)setup will have to be done obviously, but that shouldn't be too expensive either since it's just the relief that's done.
