Hello chaps;
I've had this Wishbass kicking around for a year or two since I bought it on Ebay. Initial verdict was that I like the comfort, playability and sound, but like everyone else think the build and finish quality are junk. Sorting it out has been on my "must do" list for a while.
The part of the job I've been puzzling over most is how to deal with the fingerboard, which is apparently made of "ipe", whatever that is. It's a pale and cheap-looking hardwood, and on mine it has been home to a few woodworm who have grown up and flown the nest, leaving some delightful little dart-holes behind.
What I should probably do is plane off the board and replace with a new board.
The "fix" I'm contemplating goes as follows:
1. Fill the wormholes, probably with epoxy, and stain the whole board black.
2. rout or plane the board edges and glue on thin black binding. This will serve the dual purpose of concealing the worm holes on the board edge, and the horrible, crude "position markers" cursed by every Wishbass owner - and also acting as a permanent container for the new epoxy board surface.
3. Apply epoxy, sand and finish board.
I'd appreciate any thoughts from folk with more experience of fingerboard epoxying on the proposed work.
In particular:
what thickness of binding (I can source 0.02" and 0.06" - am inclined to go for the thicker one).
what thickness of epoxy to apply.
I'd like to use a black epoxy - any issues?
Many thanks,
Adrian
