Sound cuts out, but not completely...

I've got a Fender MIM Jazz 5-string with active pickups. I've been noticing that I will be playing for a short while and all of a sudden the sound cuts in half as if there's a compressor holding the attack and sound back. If I stop playing for a little bit and then start up again, the volume returns. Then after a bit it cuts back, (but not totally out), again.

This happens with two different amps. Sometimes I'm using an effects pedal and sometimes not. Could my internal wiring of the bass be a problem? I've changed the battery numerous times and can't seem to pin down the problem. Maybe I should take it in? I don't think it's an amplifier problem since it's happening through two different rigs.

Thoughts???

check the wiring first, could be a frayed wire or weak solder joint

sounds almost like a capacitance problem where the charge build up while playing and releases after you stop

Yes. When I took the foot pedal out of the loop, I used the cable I usually use. I'll try the other cable to make sure.

Hmmm...intersting idea. I'll have to check the wiring out and see how it looks. I don't know how to check the capacitor, so if it comes to that, then I guess it's going into the shop.
Crap. I've got too much coming up to lose the use of it right now...
Thanks for the input.
