Soundborn Octapus system (8 string conversion kit)..anyone ever use it?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got this bridge and nut system to convert a 4 string into an 8 string. This is made in Germany in the 80s I guess. I don't have it on hand yet, it is being shipped.
I plan on using it on a Squier Jazz that I have broken down and begun modding/customizing.
Any tips or tricks for the Install?
I am also aware that I will need to tighten the truss rod a bit as well (because of increased tension on the neck).
Thanks for the help!

as for strings:

I'd be curious as to the neck you are using may not accomodate the spacing and the tension.

The nut will have to be cut and spaced - so buy a few nuts in case you mess up the first one.

My 8 is based on medium 5 string width neck

I don't like how "the system" uses the winding posts as double duty - I'd have to examine it closer.

It seems to be based on the Kramer system with tuning pegs off the back of the bridge plate.

Kramer at least had string mounts in the headstock for the octave courses.

I'm no expert but my gut tells me this may be a PITA to keep in tune or set-up. I may be wrong...

good luck with it and keep the forum posted.

This one comes with a brass nut already cut and spaced and this one comes with the string mounts for the head stock. I guess I hit the jackpot on this one. If it doesn't fit this neck I will save this for a rainy day....

Thanks. Yeah, I started a thread on the Luthier section. Definately need to put this on a five string neck.
