Spector truss rod questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I've owned a few older (20+ years) Spector's in the past and it seems the truss rod on all of them maxed out. Is this common with older basses or Spector's?

Is it as simple as adding washers to fix it?

Can the nut on these rods be replaced? I have one where one of the "wings" or "prongs" on the nut broke off (not my me). Is it as simple as loosing the truss rod and then the nut will spin off? The rod works fine with just the 3 prongs, but I want to make it right.

Honestly, I'll probably take this to a tech anyway, but it's an hour one way and I want to kind of know what to tell him or expect before he gives me the "just bring it in" line...

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure most Spectors have double acting truss rods and I don't think you can take the nut off. I had a Czech NS5 and I couldn't get the relief straight enough and they ended up pulling the truss rod on it and flipping it around. I don't know the whole details, but I guess with the right tools they can pull the truss rod out. Email PJ and he might be able to give you more info.
Unusual that all of your had maxxed truss rods. I've had 6 Spectors, (3 US, 3 Czech) and only one had that trouble....

Good luck!!

Older Spectors (Kramer era & back, at least) all had one-way truss rods. You can add relief, but that's about all, hence the "maxxed out" tightness of the rod.

You can send a bass to Spector for a swap out of the old rod for a new two-way variety for not that much $. That's what I did for my '86 NS-2 - well worth it!
