Spraying Laquer/humidity questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm at the stage of spraying clear laquer and the can says not to spray when its over 60% humidity. Right now the humidity is 80% and will probably stay over 60% for at least another few days. The house is air conditioned but of course I can't spray in the house. Can I spray outside and then bring the body back in right away to let it dry in the AC? I'm only taking the body out, doing a light coat and bring it right back in to hang dry, would this still be a problem?

Don't bump more than once in 24 hours, and you could have tried posting this in the Luthier's Forum for a much better/quicker response.

I only bumped once and it was hours after posting. I never knew there was a Luthiers forum, I guess I never scrolled down that far and I saw "setup and repair" and thought this was the place to post my question. I'll post it there so I don't offend anyone else.

I could see getting some responses here, but yeah- give it 24 hours. Real luthiers are out building, not on da netz.

I wasn't offended, I was just trying to steer you in the right direction.

Do as the can says or you may well wind up trapping moisture causing a "fogging" or what is called "blushing" in the paint. If you get "blushing", it can (usually ) be remedied by using an anti-blush spray(which is usually just thinner or reducer). Do yerself a favor and wait for better weather.
Here's a great site that deals in all things relating to finishing guitars with a lot of cool people contributing. It's also an excellent source of original colors in nitro-lacquer. There's a good finishing tutorial on their site that you can learn a lot from as well.
Hope yer project pans out!

I suggest measuring the humidity in both environments versus making any assumptions about the humidity levels.

Sorry, I'm on a lot of meds and sometimes they make me a bit defensive.

I did post this in the luthiers forum and got very fast replies saying that I have to wait until the humidity goes down. Just my freaking luck the weather gets crappy when I am almost done spraying. I only needed one more day of decent weather and I could be into the polishing compound phase.

Frustrating, but patience is one of those things we all need more of.

And we need it RIGHT NOW.

I was a very patient person, but with the meds I am on I am not quite the person I once was.

you can shoot outside, and then bring it inside..

but, you have to shoot very thin coats.. don't shoot heavy coats..

i shot a nitro coat over a decal on a headstock, and shot a little thicker than what i wanted to.. i live near Houston, so humidity is always high.. it started to blush.. i kind of got nervous that it was going to stay that way.. i brought it inside, and with the AC cranked down, it cleared up..

alot of thin coats.. and wait at least 3 hours between coats.. and don't do more than 4 coats per day..
