Squier vintage modified jazz bass fret buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,
I recently bought a Squier vintage modified jazz bass and it happens to buzz pass the 12th fret.
I've read a lot of threads about this kind of problem but I need a little bit more info please. I usually do all my adjustment myself but this time, anything seem to work.
I've adjusted the truss rod to specs and even if I raise the saddles, the buzz is always present. Should I remove the neck and check if there is a shim?
I have a High mass vintage bridge at home, would it help to install it?
Thanks everybody for helping me!

p.s: excuse my english, I'm from Québec.

Hi,
I bought the same bass and used the Fender specs from their website. It's difficult to know if the problem is really the frets? What condition are your strings? I replaced the cheap strings with GHS Pressurewounds in medium...

If all the strings buzz? it may not mean the saddles. Check your neck pickup and make sure there is enough clearance... should be at least 2mm clear when you fret on the 20th fret.

I assume you hear the buzz without any amp- just the bass.

Bon Chance! Your English is much better than my high school French!

Do you have a straight edge? This would help a lot. There is also a tool that you can use to check for high frets. It could have the dreaded fender neck hump.

Many Fenders develop a "hump" around the area where the neck bolts on the the body. If this is the case, the only remedy is to pull the frets in that area and level the fingerboard, then re-install the frets. I have had a pre CBS Jazz and a Jazz Deluxe V do exactly the same thing.
If it's a very minor hump, you may get away with a fret levelling, but only a competent luthier will be able to tell you.
It's a luthier job either way, I'm sorry.

Thanks for the replies,
The strings are new. I've change the bridge, less buzz now. When I adjust the rod to get a nice action and I play pass the 12 fret, i see the string touching the fret beside it.
Example. I play the E string 13 fret, the string touch a bit the 14 fret causing the buzz noise. There is no shim between the neck and body.
I'll try to work it again today but with the new bridge, it's way better.

I've decided to get another neck. Do you know if a squier classic vibe jazz bass neck would fit on my bass? Or a standard MIM fender jazz bass neck?

Mine had the same problem. I filed and sanded down the nut. It was a 100% improvement.

Sounds like either some high frets or neck rise.

I installed a CV Jazz bass neck on my Squier Standard model Jazz Bass with absolutely NO problems. In fact, I did not have to make a single adjustment - it was perfect ! The reason I changed mine was that I prefer tinted, gloss finish necks - the original neck was fine. The tinted neck looks better with my candy apple red Jazz !

Every VM Squier that I have seen has needed minor fretwork, assuming that the player wants a low action. This is strictly a neck thing, and has absolutely nothing to do with the bridge. The reason the bridge swap helped the OP, is because he set the new bridge a little higher. It only takes a couple of thou to make a noticeable difference...

If (and only if) the OP adjusted the relief correctly, then the real problem is a high fret or frets.

It could be a hump, but in most cases, we're only talking about roughly 20 minutes of shop time with a good tech. Swapping necks for this issue, is like replacing the engine in your car because it needs a valve adjustment.
