I am about to put a new neck on the franken-P. It's an Indonesian made Squire Jaguar Neck. I would like to swap the tuners out at some point as the stock tuners are not to my liking. Does anyone know of any direct replacement on these necks, or will I be redressing the woodwork on the headstock as well?

The shaft is narrower than on the ugly Squier tuners, but what I did was keep the ferrules (not sure if it's the same term) from the Squier, with the rest of the hardware from the Gotohs. All you gotta do is tighten it all down to make sure you don't get a wobble. |

I have owned allot of basses from a couple of vintage Fender's to my stable of 4 Squiers today. The only bass I would of ever changed the tuners on was an SX I bought years ago and quickly sold. The tuners were garbage and binded and popped when you turned them. My Squiers tune as well any MIA Fender,MIM's and any other basses I have owned. If they are not broke leave em be.

The ones that look cheap when you get them are truly terrible and may require modification to replace. I'm mostly talking about the ones that are enclosed-back with two dummy screws and two real screws, and have the thin tuning peg. These aren't worth a damn.
Whatcha got?

Whatcha got? | Ohhh....I forgot about those things. Are they still on the newer Squiers? I never owned a Squier with them but I know what you are talking about and agree they are junk.

They're not the ones with 2 fake screws and enclosed back. They are open gear. My problem is with the D-string tuner. It has a LOT of tension while turning even without strings on it. I disassembled and reassembled the tuner and the problem persists. Also, there were a lot of spurs/metal burs in the slots/holes in the tuning posts as well. Have cleaned those up already. It just feels like the gears on the one tuner were not machined quite right.

Just keep an eye (ear) on how well they stay tuned, which is all they're supposed to do besides look nice. I have found them to be quite satisfactory, and saved my money for other things. As someone has already said here: If it ain't brok, don't fix it. Besides, if it ever needs fixing, it's one of the easiest fixes there is.
Note: Make sure the large machine screw that holds the string peg and gear in place is snug. Any play at all in assembly can affect performance.

| | Dang it, Dale! | | | | | Bend the plate. The friction might be coming from the tuning post rubbing on the plate. Hope this helps.
