When i turn the volume know on my Squier P-bas(with Dimarzio Slit-P pickups) iget a static sound. It doesn't happen with the tone knob though. I did change th pickups my self so i might have done something wrong. I don't know.

Radio Shack or almost any electronics supply place has a cleaner for pots that comes in a spray can.

Just take the plate off that covers the wiring and pots and spray a small amount of the cleaner into the pot and turn it quickly backwards and forwards a few times. There is an opening in the pot where the wiring lugs come out of the pot that you can get the cleaner into.

If that doesn't clear up the scratchiness the pot will need to be replaced.

There's almost no way that you could cause the problem just by changing PUPs.
