Status graphite neck setup

OK, so I just had a status neck put on my Stingray. I can't seem to get the right setup on it yet. Here's where I'm at: There's a shim in the neck pocket. Without it the strings were sitting on the pickup. I didn't put the shim there. The repairman did. So I don't know if without the shim, raising the saddles would have worked. There's not much room now between the strings and the pickup, but the action's about where I'd like it. I knew going into the project that maybe routing the pickup cavity might be necessary. But that's only a last resort for me. I'm getting some string buzz higher up on the fretboard, especially above the 14th fret on the G string. There's a little relief in the neck right now: not dead flat, but less than what would be on my fretted wooden necks. My main concern is the buzzing. How do I get rid of that? I don't mind the strings being so close to the pickup. I can get used to that. Is the shim totally necessary? Could I achieve low buzzless action without it by raising the saddles and having enough clearing over the pickup? What's my best bet and what are my options? Thanks.
