| Steinberger Synapse Single Ball String Problem

I have tried to use my favorite single ball strings, TI Jazz Rounds, with my Steinber Synapse 5-string. I installed the strings the ball end in the bridge, strung the strings through the single ball adaptor and then clamped down the string with the set screw as instructed in the Steinberger paperwork. This worked very well for a few weeks, at which time I noticed the B and E strings constantly out of tune. Re-tuning would not last through the next song. I investigated the problem by removind the set screws and looking at the strings. I noticed that the screws had completely squished the string so that the wire was seperated. This loss of integrity is probably why it wouldn't stay in tune as the wires would further stretch/unravel when they were played. I tried to apply less torque on the set screw with new strings, but this did not solve the problem. Has anyone else had this problem and do they have a solution? I am using Steinberger Double Ball strings until I find a solution: these strings are ok (lower tension than LaBellas but very bright).
BTW, I also discovered my liking of TI Jazz Flats was a bit of luck. The B string is lighter than most, 0.118. I tried to put in a cheaper string that was 0.125 and discovered it will not fit through the adaptor hole, the hole is too small. I am guessing the largest size that can be used is 0.120 as it takes a bit of tugging to get the 0.118 through the hole. This is not unique to this specific bass (i.e., not a manufactuing Quality Control issue) as I have the same problem with my other two Synapse 5-strings. I have yet to contact Gibson about this but will do so next week. |
