Stingray String-Pickup question

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently bought a stingray and i lOVE it, but since its really light gauge and its 34" scale i feel the low E kinda floppy (im used to play 35" 5 stringers)

My idea is to buy hybrid slinky bass strings which is G & D standard gauge and A & E a little over standard gauge

Since the setup on my stingray seems close to perfection im wondering if ill need to adjust the pickup or action if i change gauge...?

I would never change string gauges without doing a setup - neck relief, string height, pickup height and possibly even nut adjustment. But I am fussy - many are not. I'm paid to be fussy about these things.

It may need a setup, it may not. You should familiarize yourself with changing the action, neck relief, intonation, pickup height and other things anyhow. That way in case it does need a new setup, you'll know what to do.

Try the new strings, see what needs to be changed, do it. I put some super light strings on my Sterling once and tuned it ADGC, didn't have to change anything. Even the nut worked fine, oddly enough. There have also been times where I simply changed string brands and had to adjust everything. You won't really know until the new strings are on the bass.
