Strange fret buzz on an SX

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes. I know an SX is not THEE best "out of the box" bass out there. However, everything on mine is wonderfull!

Except:

When i got it the action was pretty high. I delt with it for the last few months, but it just bugged me. So, i lower the action the other day, and now i am getting some wicked fret buzz, but only on the A and D strings. They also both buzz on the same fret (when i am holding the 9th and 12th fret).

Should i just deal with higher action on these two strings for now? Being a set-up noob, is filing a fret a daunting undertaking? Again, i'm a noob, would adjusting the truss rod be an option?

Thanks!

take it to a tech or a luthier and have them set it up and check if the frets need leveling. In the set up, they will adjust the truss rod and set the action to your desired level as well as cut the nut if it needs more relief. It's best to let a professional do it until you have the equipment to do a proper job and have some training.

truss rod is for adjusting string height (action) from the nut to the 12th fret and the bridge saddles are for adjusting the height from the 12th - the bridge

It sounds to me like you could use a set of radius gauges to match your bridge radius to your fretboard.
or take it to a qualified set up guy to see what the "real" problem is

Where in Maryland do you live?
I'm a Virginian.. i could run you through a setup sometime( not that I'm an expert) since i have the radius gauges...PM me
