strap knob stripped

Sign in to disble this ad
one of my strap knobs on my Fender Jazz kept coming loose and I had to keep rescrewing it in after every set. Now the screw just turns freely and I'm aftraid the knob/strap will fall off while playing. I thought of just super gluing it but not sure. Any ideas on how I can fix it? Thanks

Not the gospel but I had a similar problem on an agathis body.

I took some wood filler and mixed it with a product called "No more nails", but any industrial strength adhesive would do. Screwed in the screw but made sure to put a felt washer in as well. Let it sit for a night and I haven't had another problem for the last 8 months.

If it is really stripped I've heard about people using toothpicks, but someone else would have to explain that (I have no experience). Hope this helps!

The strap button on one of my basses stripped and i used the toothpick method. You need woodglue and toothpicks. Remove the screw and take the toothpicks and measure the depth of the hole then break off the toothpick and the right depth. You will need atleast 2 at that length. Then put woodglue on the toothpicks and put them on the sides of the hole. Let the glue dry and screw in the screw. Easy and really cheap fix.

A more "permanent" method would be to drill out the hole and glue a 1/8" hardwood dowel into the hole, then when the glue dries, drill a small pilot hole into the dowel for the screw.

I've used flat toothpicks (several of them) even without glue, and that worked fine. Use enough toothpicks so the screw forces them to the sides of the existing hole and the threads have to bite into the toothpick wood.
