Straplock issues

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so I picked up some straplocks seeing as my strap started to get a little loose and would detatch as I was sitting and playing. My Spector did just fine with the straplock instillation, but the wick seems to be having problems.

Apperently the gauge screw that came with my Wick is too big for the screws that came with the Schallers. So I bought another strap and some Dunlops just for the wick. And they sit in there, but I have Wiggle room, and I dont like that.

So what can I do to get the screws to stay in there? I heard something about apoxy rezen (sp?) but is that safe? What can I do to keep my basses straped on my chest and off the ground?

i had Dunlops that wouldn't fit in the screw for my MIA Pbass...
I did it ghetto style, and i put a piece of paper on top of the hole and screwed through the paper. Its VERY tight and won't budge. I trust it, and i did it to my other basses too.

Don't stuff any paper, for cryin' out loud. I'm not sure I understand your question / problem.

*Does the mounting screw fit neatly into the recess?

*Does the screw tighten or just keep turning (a la "stripped")?

*If the screw does tighten, is the strap button still wiggling freely?

*Do you have a pic you can post?

i have heard of putting wood and glue to fill it
a friend of mine did that on a cheap old bass that had the hole broken so it was huge for any screw, now that bass is more solid but not sure what wood and what glue

i did it with my MIA Fender and my Ibanez...both weigh 7-9.

Didn't do it to my schecter.

but the paper idea i have is quite true..Its a VERY tight fit and stays true. Its kinda of like another grip for the screw into the wood. You could always superglue? or drill a new hole.

It fits in there, but it wiggles.

Yes, it turns, and never locks

Yes, the button is wiggling. It dosent pull right out, it just wiggles.

Okay, we have one of two choices: larger screw or smaller hole.

The stock screw is usually a #6 (non-tapered). If its not grabbing, a #8 may work but the head will probably not fit in the recess. You can remedy this by gently grinding (a la Dremel) the screw head until it just fits. If it does not fit all the way thru the strap button (Dunlop? Schaller?), scrap the idea. Do not attempt to doctor the strap button itself!

We can tighten up the hole a couple different ways. We can pack the hole with birch toothpicks and lots of liquid / brush-on super glue. Allow to dry and clip off the excess. This works 99% of the time. The birch is just soft enough to allow re-introduction of the screw but will compact / compress as the screw advances. I've had great success with this. I've also used a variation with wooden golf tees. Some sanding may be necessary to remove any finish and allow for deeper penetration. Get a feel for how deep the hole is and cut the tee accordingly. A small drilled pilot hole will be necessary or the whole schmear (including the surrounding wood!) may crack when re-introducing the screw. Luthiers use dowel for this but a golf tee is just as effective provided you don't take any shortcuts.

Anecdotally, I did a "quick fix" on my guitarist's Telecaster using wooden cocktail toothpicks...you know, the kind with the little plastic bristle on the end. It was supposed to be temporary but its held to this day.
