String buzz at nut

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got my bass restringed with some heavier gauge strings and everything sounds good, except that now, when I strum the A-string it gets a lot of buzz. When I hold it down at the nut, the buzz goes away. What would most likely fix this? I can't really lower the action any more and I can't think of any more options.
Thanks!

Make sure the A string is wound down the post so it comes off the post close to the headstock. Usually 3 windings is recommended but I often use as much as I can pack on there and not get a sloppy winding.

I had the string wound up (away from headstock)
Sounds good now though! Thanks

If the string is wound down toward the headstock and it still buzzes at the nut, make sure the string is seated all the way down in the slot in the nut. The nut slot may not be wide enough for the larger string and will need to be filed wider, not deeper which would also cause buzz.

It is also best if the nut slot is cut at an angle where it is lower toward the headstock to give a good witness point for the string to "break" toward the tuner.
