A string buzzes at the nut

Sign in to disble this ad
I have just changed my strings and now the A string buzzes on the nut. It is a problem that i have not encountered before. The strings I have put on are thicker than my previous ones. Could this be the problem?

What kind of bass is it, because I had the same problem with my fretless jazz. My problem was caused by the string not angling enough over the nut.

no, usually the problem is when they are thinner.

the problem is there is not enough down force on the strings at the nut, there are a few ways to solve this, either cutting the next string you buy a bit longer to get an extra wrap DOWN the post.

EDIT: and make sure you are making the string go down the post when you are putting new ones on (not bundleing up near the top)

another is to add another string tree either a single loop or another 2-string string tree over the a or the E for a more permanent easier fix.

A temporary fix on my Fender was to put a small piece of paper between the offending string (the "A" string in that case)and the nut.

Then I had my luthier do a complete setup and he got rid of the problem by re cutting the nut. Now, on that bass the nut had to be cut deeper anyway, but if your's is spot on, it might need a new one. It isn't that expensive.

BTW, that bass had an extra string tree on it when I got it, and it didn't help at all.

It's a Shine Tele Bass (http://www.saein.co.kr/2007/bass/wob940.php)

The problem does stop if i gently touch the string either on the nut or just before the nut and the problem only occurs if i play the string open.

make sure the last wrap of the string is all the way down to the peg-head on the post.

aha problem solved. the string had started to wind over the top of itself. i detuned it, moved it to its proper place and retuned it and the buzz has gone.

Thanks for your help.

If you change string gauge, you probably want to set up your bass again. Sounds like your truss rod needs to be loosened a little (the neck needs to come a little further forward).

EDIT: Nevermind. You fixed the problem.
