k guys on my 4 string t-bird it came with 45-105 strings and it was the clearest bass i ever heard.(the reason i bought it)now i put slinkys on 40-100 and the rattle a bit on the frets especial the D.Now how can thinner strings rattle more than fat strings the are closer to the frets?
If i put 45-105's do you think it might go back to being really clear again?maybe ill try some DR's

Adjust the action at the bridge (make the strings a bit higher) - that MAY help if you've got the problem I think you've got...otherwise - didn't Paul McCartney stick matchsticks in the nut of his first guitar to stop the strings from rattling...?

theyre rattling because theyre sitting very low in the nut. the slots were cut for bigger strings and now you have smaller ones in it which will lower your action. try adjusting the bridge first and if that doesnt help a truss adjustment might be necessary.

Well if it helps at all the action is actuly a little higher than id like it over the 12th fret.im guessing the nexk is too straight.i mean if i bowed it a bit and lowerd the action it would help right?..played bass for 30 years and never got into all this repair stuff..about time haha

The same thing happened to me. I bought a MIM Jazz of ebay and it had a large guage on it and I put slinky 40-100 on and they rattle bad acousticly. Especially the D. I dont know what to do though. Maybe its the brand of strings? LOL . So if the nut has large slots do I have to replace the nut? Idk what to do
