String clearance from rosewood at the nut

Sign in to disble this ad
New 2007 Fender Standard Jazz. First bass I've owned. My goal is to get the action the same on all the frets, a straight neck. The bass I borrowed to start learning on was setup this way, almost no bend in neck, and was a dream to play, real nice on the fingers.

When I straightened the neck and then lowered the bridges to have about the same string height at the 17th fret as the 1st fret it buzzed like crazy. I had to back off the neck adjustment to put back more bend in the neck to stop the buzz. Now I am almost right back where I started. The only thing I can figure is the string grooves are cut too low in the nut. Is there a measurment for this string height at the nut? I held the strings down at the 2nd fret and can tap and hear and see very minimum clearance on the first fret.

Am I trying to get the action too low in the middle of neck?

Thanks

I have the same problem with my MIM jazz, although its like a '94 model or something. The nut does seem to feel really low on mine too.

I just got so fed up with the fret buzz (which is still apparent on some strings) that I now just play with high fingerboard action.

The sucky part is, last bass guitar I had setup by my local store did a far worse job than I did myself at setting it up - so I cant even use the "take it to a pro" option.
