Question String Gauge and Nut

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm about to buy new strings and I read somewhere that when you buy heavier gauge strings, you need to adjust the truss-rod and re-slot the nut. I know how to adjust the truss rod already, but it it really necessary to re-slot/cut the nut or whatever ? I'm only going to go from a 45-65-85-105 set to 50-70-90-110 set. Also, my bass is almost exclusively in drop-C tuning if that matters.

No, there's no need to reslot the nut when making minor string gauge changes. However, make sure you have adequate 1st fret clearance with the new string set.

How would I be able to do this, and if there isn't enough clearance, how would I fix it?

Most probably that is all you will need to do.

If more work is needed, let's deal with it at that point...
What he said! Nut adjustment / rehab is not for the faint-of-heart.
