String height on a standard j bass

I noticed the A and D strings are lower than the E and G, and the pick up is straight, not angled. Is there a reason for this ? Is it better to have them like this rather than all the same height ?

Essentially, the strings follow the curvature of the fretboard, not the pickups. Check the stickies section for set-up info. There's all sorts of guides to help you adjust the string height on your instrument to where it should be.
