String keeps popping out! ....help!

Sign in to disble this ad
hey everyone,
I'm having a little problem with my geddy le jazz bass. I just got some d'addario chromes (medium light guage, flatwound) to replace my old set of marcus miller fat beam by DR. Odviously I'm looking for a different sound. I've used chromes before on other basses but never on the geddy. The problem is when I play a note on the new A string, down near the nut, or do a little bend higher up the neck, the string slippes/pops out of the slot in th nut. Part of the problem might be that I play with an agressive touch but not nearly as much as some (about as hard as geddy I would say). I didn't have this problem with th old strings but the chromes are very thinck strings. Do I need to have the nut re-cut? I'm hesitant to do that because I'm sure I won't use chromes forever. Any suggestions are welcome! thanks for your help!(in advance)

Does your string sit all the way down in the nut? maybe (as you were thinking) you nut needs to be cut deeper?

It might not need to be cut deeper but maybe a little bit wider for the heaver guage string. If you go back to the DRs the action will stay the same.

ok thanks, I'm not sure how to get the nut off of a geddy... its different than alot of other basses. How much would it cost to get this done and where would I go to get it done? Its not to major so i'm pretty sure Long and Mcquade would do it rite?

Also, the bass is reletively new and I'm still protective of it. I'm just hesitant to send it in a gig bag... if the bass was damage by the store, will they cover it? Or will I be liable because i gave it to them in a gig bag?

thnx!

It should be a fairly inexpensive fix. Have a tech do it. Don't send the bass to the store. Take it in yourself, show it to the tech and get him to tell you what he plans to do and how much it will cost. When the job is done, try the bass out in the store before you leave with it. Make sure it's okay. If they're not too busy they may be able to fix it while you wait. Some stores are so busy you might have to wait a week or more before thy get around to it.

Some tech departments at L&M stores are good, some not so good. It just depends on the store. The same is true with other chains.

Any decent store will make good on any damage they cause. L&M is a reputable outfit. I wouldn't worry.

They should be able to fix that in about 15 minutes.
