String Mute

I'm repairing my '64 Epi, and the bass has a foam string mute on the bridge. It's pretty much dead -- the mute is so creased that it doesn't work.

Anyone know what kind of foam I could use to replace it?
Or do you need more information?

I use a cut up sock on my p-bass, other people are happy with chunks of a kitchen sponge

I just replaced it with a piece of weather-sealing foam -- like, the stuff that goes on doorframes.

We'll see how it works when I get strings.

That should work fine. This is what I use.

Anyone ever check their intonation after putting foam under the strings?

I have thin foam that really just brushes the strings - it shouldn't be adding a whole lot of up pressure.

But, after putting the foam in, my intonation is off non-trivially - enough to be unacceptable.

Am I alone in this?
