Whats the benefit? I'm doing some work on my six soon and might purchase one if they seem worth it

The string retainer keeps the string more firmly in place at the nut. It is usually only necessary on the strings whose pegs are farther from the nut (e.g. D & G strings on a four-in-line headstock).

So on a six with a 3/3 headstock do you think I would benefit from placing a two string string retainer on my A and D strings?

It's an angle thing.

Tuners closer to the nut can pretty well pull the strings tighter into the grooves in the nut than those that are further away.

IF one winds the strings on the tuner posts correctly, this isn't much of a problem, but the trees force the strings to a different angle when they breakover the nut.

Some headstocks are angled and don't need retainers. Are you having issues with the strings?

If you have an angled headstock, you don't need retainers. Don't go drilling into it if you don't need to.
