String Spacing for a Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a jazz bass that has a Schaller roller bridge. It is the first bass I have that has adjustable string spacing.

What is the standard bridge string spacing for a Fender Jazz? How do I set up the bridge for this?

What would make me want to deviate from this? Does anyone here have examples as to why I would want strings farther apart or closer together?

19mm at the bridge is standard for Fender 4's.

Just roll the saddles forward or backwards as they're threaded and will move side to side. Moving them is a matter of preference. Some like closer at the bridge, some don't.

However, moving them any significant amount will have an effect on tone as the pickups are designed to have the strings passing between or nearly between the pole pieces.
