String Spacing Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone tell me why guitar string spacing is measured as to encompass all strings (from the center of the lowest string to the center of the highest string) but bass string spacing is measured only between one string and the next?

Also, does anyone know what 'standard' or 'average' string spacing is on a six string guitar and on a four string bass?

Thanks in advance!

um, because guitars usually have 6 strings, so it gives a general idea of the spacing of the strings, but basses have anything from 4 to 12 strings, so if i told you my 6-string had a 114mm string span you'd have to whip out a calculator to figure if thats wide or narrow compared to a 190mm 10-stringer. with per string spacing you can tell more easily.

17mm is narrow, 19mm is wide. generally thereabouts.
