String tension on an SG Bass / EB3

Sign in to disble this ad
A question for all you SG Bass / EB3 owners...

I'm loving my new SG Bass but was having problems with the low string tension after switching from P-Bass strung with 50 - 110's. I've put a set of Ernie Ball Power Slinkys (55 - 110) on it and the tension is much better now.

I emailed Gibson to check this was ok and they've told me there's a possibility I'll damage the neck using such a high guage but it's holding up fine. I tweaked the truss rod and got the neck dead straight and there's loads of play left in it.

So what do you guys and gals think? It doesn't seem to be doing any harm but I'm worried the headstock is going to suddenly snap off or something. Any opinions?

Ta very much.

I use 40-60-80-100 flatwounds on mine - otherwise, it doesn't sounf like an EB3 - I use heavier on my Fender Jazz if I want the Fender sound.

There's nothing wrong with the string tension using light or medium gauge strings on an EB-3. The neck is quite slender and clearly is not as robust as a Fender P neck.

Last weekend I tried installing Labella Jamersons (.52-.110) on my new EB-3 and it definitely loaded up the neck...the increased bow was visible at once...and it was substantial. Frankly, there was enough bow that it bothered me. I removed them and installed a set of D'Addario Chrome flats, .45-.100 gauge. They play beautifully, and the neck immediately resumed a normal position. I might have to take just 1/8 turn on the truss rod to get it right where I want it.

I normally play with a slightly thicker string, but the Chromes work beautifully with the EB-3 and I don't have to worry about it.

If the factory tells you that your strings are too heavy for the instrument, WHY would you ignore their advice? That's just asking for trouble. I realize you are used to heavier strings, but I think you would be smart to depart from them on this instrument.

I'm not saying that you can't use them, but over time it's guaranteed to put more stress on that slender, fast neck. I don't see the long-term benefit.
