String tension's effect on other strings?...

Can't think of a good way of putting it in the title, but does the tension of stings your not playing effect the sound of ones you are. So for example if you have a heavier D and G string, will the overall increase in tension effect the sound of you E or A string?

I think it's more of an issue when tuning up than playing.

They way I see it, of course. My bass is unplayable until I have all 4 strings on and tuned. Otherwise the neck is waay too straight/back bowed. When the D and G are heavier (more tension) it is going to bow the next more, thus affecting other strings.

the neck is built to have the tension of all the strings on it.

I imagine the gauge would have a bit of an effect yes, but as to whether or not its something noticable im not sure.. you would notice the change In string gauge before you notice the tension affecting the whole neck overall

It depends on the rigidity of your neck.

The more the truss rod is engaged to fight the tension the strings put on the neck the less the strings will sustain - but only marginally.

Canna tell ya about tonal shifts...

Just thought it might be worth mentioning cos 110s on my Fender seem to have made it alot louder since I made the switch.
