A string volume drop from open to 5th fret

Sign in to disble this ad
I have replaced stock pickup of Jay Turser JTB-401 to Lace Alumitone pickup recently.

Love the tone but...

Strange problem happend.

Volume of A string from open to 5th fret suddenly dropped.

The rest of A string is same as before.

I use 11 month old Fender 9050M flatwound and there is no fret buzz on entire A string.

I've checked string twisting, but there is no twisting on A string.

How can I solve this problem?

Does the string get choked by something? Does it buzz or clack against the fret at those positions?

Or is it just the amplified volume that changes?

Like a dead spot? Maybe you never noticed it before? Is the replacement pickup more powerful? Mounted too close to the strings? Could be mounted by a "node" of "D" and causing vibration cancellation? Just a shot in the dark...

No string choking and fret buzz...

Pickup height adjusted to no pulsing sound at last fret.

No such problem when using stock pickup.

Maybe the Alumitone origin?...

listen closely to the sound acoustically...

I'm suspecting it's a dead spot in the neck...or a bad string...

when you changed pickups, did you change strings and/or setup, too?

No, I didn't change strings and setup when changing pickup.

Listening through upper horn without amplification, open to 5th fret volume of A is somewhat weak - like someone is holding the A string!

it sounds like a dead spot on the neck...the lace pickup is probably more sensitive to dynamics and that is why you are just now discovering the problem.

try giving the trussrod a little tweak...don't turn it much, just tension it a little (like about 15-20 degrees)...also check that your neck bolts are tight (not overtightened, however)...

if that doesn't work, try changing the strings...
