String Wear - Hipshot vs. String-Thru Body

Sign in to disble this ad
With the extreme string break angle after the bridge, does anyone forsee potential string breakage from a combination of stringing through body and the constant change from tuning the E string to a D rapidly with a Hipshot? The Hipshot is a necessity to my playing, but not so much the string through body feature. However, my fretless has the older USA bridge that doesn't allow for stringing through body. Does anyone anticipate any string related issues with through body stringing in conjunction with a Hipshot Xtender?

I can't imagine an E string breaking. I've had my G string break at the bridge (string through body bridge) on my Precision bass twice. I think it was due to the angle and the fact that G strings are easier to break.

I'm talking a bit more than breaking... premature wear that will cause the string to deaden quicker than the rest, or lose the ability to stay in tune as long, etc.

Nope, they're D'Addario XL's.
