How far past the tunning post should you cut so you have a enough to go around the post? I thought it was 3 inches, but want to be sure. Thanks to all who help.

I measure from the tip of my index finger to my knuckle. This probably give me a bit more length than I need but having a bit extra won't hurt anything. OTOH having too little . . .

I just go four finger widths beyond the peg.

these suggestions are fine, but i would recommend a little extra on the A string, to keep it from rattling in the nut slot. its angle is shallower than the other 3 strings, so an extra wrap or two will increase its angle over the nut, fixing any rattle issues.

+1 on the A string tip. I find it isn't necessary to cut the G at all usually, the D I'll cut so it goes a couple inches past the headstock. The A I'll cut to the end of the headstock, or longer. Best to leave it a little long first, and try it. If needed, trim a bit and try again. It is important, as Walter said, to wrap some extra string on the A tuner, so it pulls down tight at the nut. The E I'll cut to the D tuner.
