Strings and fretboard question

Sign in to disble this ad
I pulled out my '82 Ibanez Roadstar and while playing at practice noticed that when I fret the D and G strings around the 13th fret and higher the entire string rests across the fretboard and get muted. The E and A strings don't when fretted at this postion on the board.

I am wondering if this is intonation, string height, etc for those strings only? I should know this but I felt better to post this on the board.

The next is fairly straight, only a slight bow.

It probably needs a minor bridge height adjustment, maybe a minor truss rod adjustment, maybe some minor fret leveling. It doesn't sound like a serious problem. I'd take it to a good tech.

Thanks, the truss rod is tighter than heck...frankly I'm afraid to even suggest someone turn it. I can live with the slight bow. But I never thought of fret levelling.

It may not be too tight, it may be corroded. Before I tighten up a truss rod during a set up, I take it all the way off and lube it first. You could need fret levelling, in fact, its a pretty good bet you do. If the lower frets are too worn, and the higher ones are not, you will not be able to adjust the truss rod to bow enough to clear the high frets and still have decent action. That may have been what someone was trying to do if they cranked the truss rod all the way tight.
