| Strings & pickup alignment?

Hi all,
If I look at my bass from the top I see that my E-string is precisely aligned between 2 pole pieces of both pickups. A, D and G are progressively more aligned towards 1 pole piece (see attached picture). Is this by design? (70's Ibanez J-bass). My teacher has a fairly new Jan Lull J-bass, all strings are "neatly" aligned between pole pieces so that was making me ask you!
