Strings and pickup pole pieces

How important is it for the strings to be centered over the pole pieces in the pickups? Can they be closer to one pole than the other?

if it doesnt seem to effect the sound then why bother. but if it bugs you, you can get a ba2 bridge and file it yourself and it will sit right over the pole pieces if you do it right.
